UPI Failed Transaction Guide
UPI Money Debited But Receiver Did Not Get It: What to Do
If your UPI payment was debited from your bank account but the receiver says the money was not credited, do not make another payment immediately. First check the transaction status, collect proof, raise a complaint through the UPI app or bank, and escalate only if the issue is not resolved within the applicable timeline.
Quick Answer
In a normal failed UPI fund transfer where your account is debited but the receiver account is not credited, the transaction should either be credited to the receiver or reversed to your account. RBI’s failed transaction framework gives the timeline as latest by T + 1 day for this type of UPI case. Here, T means the calendar date of the transaction.
Check These Before Complaining
- Open your UPI app and check whether the transaction is shown as successful, failed, or pending.
- Check your bank statement or mini statement, not only the UPI app screen.
- Ask the receiver to check the bank account linked with that UPI ID.
- Save the transaction ID, UTR, RRN, date, time, amount, receiver UPI ID, and screenshots.
- Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, password, card details, or screen-sharing access with anyone.
Refund Timeline for UPI Failed Transactions
The timeline depends on the type of issue. The table below covers the most common UPI debit problems.
| Situation | Expected action | Timeline | Delay compensation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account debited but receiver account not credited | Credit to receiver or reversal to sender | Latest by T + 1 day | ₹100 per day beyond T + 1 day |
| Account debited but merchant did not receive confirmation | Auto-reversal if payment is not completed | Within T + 5 days | ₹100 per day beyond T + 5 days |
Step-by-Step Complaint Process
Open the failed or pending transaction in your UPI app and use the help, dispute, raise issue, or report problem option.
Complain to the bank from which money was debited. Share the UTR, RRN, date, time, amount, and screenshots.
You can use NPCI UPI Help to check transaction status or raise a UPI complaint for failed payment issues.
If the bank does not reply within 30 days, rejects the complaint, or you are not satisfied with the reply, you can escalate through RBI CMS.
